Templates are a basic piece of lapidary hardware and are used to scribe outlines of cabochon shapes on rock slabs prior to trim sawing and for fast measuring. The Gem-Temp® line consists of six aluminum and three clear plastic templates and are manufactured by the Graves Company. The colorful, easy to recognize, anodized aluminum templates offer rigidity and are used to make "double-sided" outlines. Both sides of a cabochon may be scribed by placing a slab sandwiched between two connecting templates and outlining each side. Grinding proceeds faster and more accurately with this method.
