Rolling
tumblers are the most commonly used ranging in size from 4lb. to
40lb. for hobby use and 200 to 300lbs for commercial use The polishing
is usually done in four stages (coarse grind, fine grind, pre-polish and
polish) with each stage running for 7 to 10 days depending on type and
hardness of material. Material and tumbler have to be thoroughly cleaned
between each stage. Vibratory
tumblers are much faster requiring approx. two days for each stage
but the material and tumbler have to be cleaned and re-started several
times for the coarse and fine grind stages requiring more labor time.
There are a number of grits
and polishes
available,
determined by type and hardness of material to be polished.
Like many rockhounds my hobby started by hicking and picking up rocks
that were pretty or unusual looking. After accumulating a large amount
of rocks I thought what am I going to do with them. I talked with some
friends that were rockhounds and they said why don't you get a tumbler
and polish them.
That was the beginning of many years of enjoyment from this great
hobby.
Tumble polishing is only one of many ways to polish rocks but is
probably the easy-est and fastest ways to get started. There are two
basic types of rock tumblers. Rolling
tumblers and
vibratory tumblers. I will go into the difference and advantage and
disadvantage of them on my next post so check back.
